With Gary Barker from The Average Adventuring Podcast coming through with a TV character crush from a show that premiered in 1999, I wanted to stick with the theme throughout the week. So on Monday, we talked about Fox Crane from ‘Passions,’ but right now it’s all about a bevy of other TV characters who found themselves quite the fanbase back when their shows premiered that year. I would’ve put Jesse Eisenberg’s Kenny Green from ‘Get Real,’ but I think I was the only one who tuned into that now a relic of the small screen. Now let’s get to the TV character crushes from 1999 that had many seeing hearts.
Meadow Soprano, The Sopranos
Archie Bunker may’ve introduced us to the anti-hero, but Tony Soprano took it a step further. So much so that the turn of the century would see a hell of a lot more characters just like him. However, while he was the head of the family, many my age who tuned in at the time found themselves enamored with Tony’s daughter, Meadow.
Fry, Futurama
Animated crushes are nothing new here, and when it came to Fry from ‘Futurama’ – how could you not fall for his dopey yet lovable demeanor?
Liz Parker, Roswell
Liz Parker was the crush people had who were into aliens but also too spooked to tune into ‘The X-Files.’
Clu Bell, So Weird
There was nothing that Erik von Detten did back in the day that didn’t make many swoon, including a show where a teenage girl gets into paranormal shit while on tour with her musician mother.
Reggie Rocket, Rocket Power
This era was heavily dominated by the idea of extreme thanks to the likes of The X-Games. Hell, even our deodorant was labeled extreme. With that, Nickelodeon decided to bank on the popularity of all of the above and delivered ‘Rocket Power.’ All the characters had something that made them relatable, but Reggie stood out as the absolute coolest – or rather, most extreme.
Sam Seaborn, The West Wing
Baby, it’s Rob Lowe.
Sam McPherson, Popular
Viva la Popular! This cancellation still hurts many, including Jon Reilly from Life’s But a Song. It also hurts many who crushed hard on the stunning Sam McPherson.
Spongebob, SpongeBob SquarePants
Okay, so there are likely people out there who would definitely fate Spongebob and I am not judging them. However, this is more like a crush that is built on love and admiration for a show that really went above and beyond when it debuted. While it’s not my cup of tea anymore, like I’m sure it’s not for many who were there when it initially aired, there are still early episodes I can watch and be entertained by all these years later.
Lindsay Weir, Freaks and Geeks
I think we can all agree that…Linda Cardellini, right?
Angel, Angel
My 9th grade English teacher had a straight-up poster of David Boreanaz’s Angel in her classroom for no other reason than she thought he was the hottest man at the time, and a lot of people would not argue with her about that.
