Years ago I was fresh out of college with little to no skills, but there I was – in the real world with concerts to go to, so I started freelance writing. It eventually led to Golden Mixtape, my first creative endeavor. Those I interviewed were often asked to make mixtapes based on this and that, and I also made a few along the way so today I have at least one skill. A skill I’m utilizing today to bring you my holiday crush mixtape. If you read Monday’s post about Britney Spears or listened to this week’s episode, you know I love Mariah Carey’s Christmas staple BUT I wanted to highlight other songs that are my reason for the season. So let’s get to it!
Yule Shoot Your Eye Out, Fall Out Boy
Again, listen to the show if you wanna know why this emo holiday tune makes me feel a certain type of way. Honestly, though, Patrick Stump could sing any song around this time of year and I’d be like, go gurl.
Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town, Jackson 5
The Jackson 5 did not have to go that hard with this rendition, but they did. I dare you not to feel the holy spirit move through you when this song comes on.
Christmas Time is Here, Alvin & the Chipmunks
Many associate the holidays with family, and I’m no different. The Chipmunks have always been a staple in my home from the show to the movies, so this pick always makes me feel at home – even when I’m on the other side of the country.
Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, Christina Aguilera
Much like Patrick Stump, I could listen to Christina sing just about any holiday classic and be enthralled.
Somewhere in My Memory, John Williams
John Williams is the beast behind so many amazing movie scores that you’d have to go out of your way to find an influential movie he wasn’t a part of. That said, I’ll always perk up when this one from ‘Home Alone’ comes on.
I Wish It Was Christmas, SNL
Jimmy Fallon, Horatio Sanz, and the others who’ve taken part in this on ‘Saturday Night Live,’ thank you.
Mr. Hankey, the Christmas Poo, South Park
Just like with The Chipmunks, ‘South Park’ is a family favorite and when we first met Mr. Hankey, my family freaking LOST IT.
Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, N’SYNC
I’m a Backstreet Girl for life, but this song is the best Christmas song to come from a boy band.
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Burl Ives
How could I not include a song from one of my all-time favorite movies about an outcast and punk rock elf?
Last Christmas, Jimmy Eat World
Lyrics to “The Middle” live on my leg underneath my middle child muse, Lisa Simpson, but I wouldn’t say Jimmy Eat World is my favorite band by any means. However, in the last few years, I’ve found myself listening to them a bit more and there is just something about Jim Adkins’ voice that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
