Since the first time we logged onto the internet, we’ve found ourselves enamored with at least one person based solely on what we saw on the screen in front of us. Be it because of a picture they most definitely altered, a lyric they posted to seem deep, or the layout of their MySpace page. Any of those are reason enough to form an online crush and since that is what this week was all about thanks to Victor of The Liquor Talk Podcast coming through to tell of a time he fell for a girl on the World Wide Web. So let’s take a look at all of the places that we’ve fallen prey to an online crush or two in our day.
AOL Chat Rooms

The internet was not something I had readily available to me when AOL chat rooms were a big thing. I didn’t have AIM until well into my college years, but I did have friends who were quite interested in it. So from their tales and memories, I know all too well the early addiction of hearing that little door opening can do to a person.
LiveJournal

LiveJournal felt like a place where emo kids went to vent their parental issues and woes, but it was also the home of early gossip sites like Oh No They Didn’t. An interesting place that really helped lay a solid foundation for the insanity that was to come online.
MySpace

People like to say that MySpace was when times were simple. That it wasn’t littered with influencers and ads, and yeah, I don’t remember the algorithm and the ads much but influencers? Do none of you remember Scene Queens? The girls with dead raccoons on their heads that did absolutely nothing but were famous for…some reason? MySpace was also the platform that helped launch music careers and was a vital part of the DIY scene.
YouTube

Nothing makes me feel quite as old as YouTube starting the year I was a college freshman. Now look at us. I’m a struggle bus podcaster and YouTube is worth billions and has little kids making bank reviewing toys. Good times. Good times.

…well, X, but around these parts, it will always be Twitter. This might be the one social media I’m riding with until the day I turn on my computer and it’s just not there.
Tumblr

Tumblr was like the evolution of LiveJournal in many ways, but it became sort of known for the site where you could see a whole lotta sexual things. That is until they put a stop to the fun.

Facebook, otherwise known as the place where everyone learned their older relatives weren’t right in the head.

This is where words started to matter less and less online, and we really just wanted to see pictures. It’s like trading novels for books found in a Pre-K classroom.
Snapchat

Out of all of the sites listed, Snapchat may be the one that has caused the most online crushes because you could basically be up on that trading risque photos back and forth.
TikTok

From chatting online until the wee hours of the morning to doing 15-second dance routines that make you look like an air traffic controller who just visited Walter White…
