Crushes that Raised Us: Middle School Lessons

Middle school for millennials meant a lot of things…frosted tips, gel pens, and performing the latest choreo from MTV at the annual talent show. For real, y’all who did that, props to you. That’s wild! Even wilder are the lessons we learned along the way when it came to ourselves and ultimately crushing.

Sense of Self

It’s no longer just about what we like and don’t like, but about how we react to real-life situations and how our actions internalize who we are in the grand scheme.

Hormones Are Driving

All those new feelings were in control, and there was nothing we could do. We were going to hump anything and everything we could find.

Being Cool is Key

There is one point in which we truly believe that popularity is everything. Sad, but true. We put way too much stock into being liked by everyone, including our crush.

Alphas Aren’t Always Best

Then somewhere along the lines, we realize that perhaps that boy in the coolest JNCO Jeans isn’t the big dog we thought he was and start to look elsewhere.

Teen Movies are Guide You

Millennials truly used teen movies, both from Hughes and present-day to guide us, and while it was fun to believe that taking off one’s glasses would transform the entire trajectory of their life, it was also insane.

Finding Your Clique

Finding your tribe makes all the sense in the world at that age.

Music, Fashion, Trends

On top of teen movies, we also put a lot of stock in the trends because they helped us get a sense of who we were and who our clique was going to be.

Purity vs Prude

The 2000s went heavy with both the idea that sex sells, but also this weird purity culture that was implemented via church youth groups around the country at that time.

Limp Bizkit

We wanted to do it all for the nookie, but at that age – nookie was more the hormonal goal than the reality.

We Can Make it Through

No matter how hard middle school is, we can get through it like Emma, Manny, Craig, and all the rest of the students at Degrassi.
